HOW TO START YOUR SEEDS INDOORS

1.Purchase your seeds from a seed catalog company. Here is a list of some Seed Company's-- Gurney's,Henery Fields, and Stokes just to name a few. You may pay a little more ,but you get quality seeds.

2.Purchase as many seed trays as you think you mat need. You can also purchases from the seed catalog. Or you can buy seed trays at most stores in the spring. When you purchases your trays its best to buy ones that have a bottom liner,if you have enought sun and heat for your seeds to get started. If not look for a tray with a heating pad. Also if you are going to grow seeds in a basement purchase a grow light, and make sure there is good ventalation. You may have to use a fan at times. You plants need to be dry,but the soil should be moist.

3.Purchase some good potting soil, but buy your potting soil at a garden center or store. If you buy potting soil from a seed catalog company you have to pay a lot for shipping.

4. Some plants not to start for seed are the following--corn,cucumbers.any type of squash,(summer or winter) Those seeds grow much better if you direct seed them. Yes I know you see cucumbers, corn, and squashes at the Greenhoueses, but a greenhouse is able to grow plant much better than at home. A Greenhouse is able to control the growning environment.

5.Plant you seeds about 6 weeks before you put your plants in the ground.

6.Water your soil and not the new plants. If possible water from the bottom if,you buy trays with water pads on the bottom. Plant take the water from the bottom, and develope a better root system. 7. Don't ever touch the plants, they can easly develop a disease. Now go and have some fun,and remember you are what you eat.

We start with soil preperation

Organic Matter

The success or failure of the organic approach depends on how gardeners prepare organic matter. Organic matter improves soil tilth and prevents soil compaction. It increases the water holding ability of the soil. It provides a more favorable soil environment for earthworms and beneficial microorganisms. Organic matter slows erosion, and decay, Organic matter releases nitrogen and other nutrients to growing crops. Carbon dioxide from decaying organic matter brings minerals of the soil into solution. This makes it available to growing plants. Many soils of the world have been ruined, because they have been depleted of organic matter. Work into to the top 3 inches of your soil with any of the following--- chicken, cow, horse. or sheep manure.

Organic farming

Is the key to feeding the world, and it is much less costly than chemical gardening. The key is composting each and every year.

See our how to make Compost below---

Organic gardening differs from "conventional" gardening in the areas of fertilization and pest control. The organic gardener prefers to use all natural and organic materials.

To convert organic matter to rich, dark humus, the microorganisms

in your compost pile or bin need energy. To speed decomposition use Green Plant Matter with kitchen scraps, fresh weeds and other green materials, and cut up straw or leaves, and dirt to cover. Turn the pile over once a day to mix, and keep the pile wet(not driping wet) You should have finished compost in 2-4 weeks. Use Dry Plant Matter: with autumn leaves, straw and other dead fibrous matter cover with dirt turn once a week for finished compost in 8-12 weeks. Tip: The smaller the fibrous mater(straw or leaves) the faster it will decompose. Also keep the pile wet. If you use the open pit try and make the pile no more than 5 ft high and 4ft wide. I make compost all year long in small pails, and it works great. Check below for Crazy Pete's Recipe for SUPER COMPOST,just fill out the form and we will send it to you FREE.

Choosing a Location For Your Garden --

Select a plot of good, well-drained soil near a water supply. It should be close to the home for convenience. Choose an area that is very sunny. If you have hard pack soil try and choose an area with not many rocks. If you have sandy soil you should not have this problem

The Garden Design --

My suggestion would be to draw out on paper the location of each row and the crop or succession of crops to be planted.

PLANTING GUIDE

Choose the varieties of vegetables that best suit the area you live in. Also plant the most disease resident varieties of plants. Suggestion, when you are looking to purchase plants look for the ones that look stronger and have no flowers on them yet.
The plants that have no flowers on them are the strongest. Most vegetables are easy to plant, with the exception of tomatoes and cucumbers. When you plant Tomatoes and Cucumbers use a collar. A collar is just a small piece of newspaper raped around your Tomato, and Cucumber plants. There is a very small worm that will eat Tomato and Cucumber plants. Also plant your Tomatoes deep into the ground up to the main stems. Also remember to plant after the frost date in your area. The exception is that you can plant peas and spinach,as soon as you can work the soil.

Companion Planting------

Most vegetables grow best with different other vegetables: examlpe.. Tomatoes with carrots:marigolds:limas,Cucumbers with beans, corn, and peas.
email us and we will send you the whole list.

SOME MORE INFORMATION ON SOIL PREPERATION

SOIL PREPARATION

Organic fertilizer and soil conditioning materials are slow working so they should be mixed into the soil at least three weeks to 4 weeks ahead of planting. Then you should work the organic matter into the soil with your rotor tiller or shovel. If your garden is to be biger than 10x10 or 100 square feet,my suggestion would be to use a roter tiller. You can rent a roter tiller or buy one for around $300 dollars. Email us for a complete list of Organic Soil Conditioners.
The choose is yours.

Soil PH

Should be from 6.5 to 7.0 send a soil to your local college or University. The University will tell you what you need to improve your soil. Example.... lime will increase the PH in your soil, and pine needles or coffee grounds will lower the PH factor. If,you would like we can send you a list of organic materials that change the Ph factor. Also you may choose to purchase a PH meter at most Hardware Stores.
Make sure you keep your garden tools clean, and dry.

Proper temperature of soil -

Should be above 50°F. at planting time

----Adequate lime for use by micro-organisms and to keep the soil from being acid, but check your PH before adding any lime and make sure the PH range is 6.5 to 7.0

The COMPOST PILE----

We have instruction on our other web page fo making compost. You can make compost in 5 gallon pails, just think small.

Use of Compost in the Garden----

Compost is artificial manure, it should be used much as you would manure. A final word on compost you can never have too much compost for your garden
Side dress your vegetables every 2 to 3 weeks.

Bug Control----

Plant herbs, garlic, and merigols flowers around your garden.
You could also purchase organic Garden sprays from a Company called GARDENS ALIVE
See our other web pages for more information on gardening solutions.

Water your garden----

The first thing in the am or just before the sun goes down. About 1 hour every day, unless it rains that day. the big thing about watering is try and not have your soil get soggy. (like mud pies) If your soil gets too wet it attracts disease, and you could loose you vegetables overnight.

WEED THAT GARDEN

If,you keep those weeds under control you will have strong and healthy vegetables. One word of Caution don't weed your garden when the soil is wet. If you touch the plants you could cause Fungal disease, and the next day your plants could be all dead.

MULCH THAT GARDEN

If you don't like weeding. place a two inch layer of the following around your vegetables---straw,compost, grass that didn't go to seed. Or you can put down a layer of black plastic around your vegetables. Try using what you have on hand. Or you could try using a combination of mulches. The choose is yours. Do what ever is the easiest for you.

PICKING YOUR VEGETABLES----

Pick your vegetables when they are the ripest,if you can waite that long. If, you are like us we can't waite,so we plant a large amout of vegetables. That way I can eat some vegetables which are not quite ripe and some that are the ripest. This of course depends on how much space you have.

CLEAN THAT GARDEN AT THE END OF THE SEASON

Make sure you clean up all the dead plants in your garden, and use them to start next years compost pile. Dead plants may contain bugs underneath,if you don't clean your garden, you will have more bugs next year. If you have lots of leaves in your yard put them into your garden after you clean up the dead matter. The leaves will decay over the winter and add to the soil structure. Or you can just compost the leaves In the Spring you can till the undecayed matter into the soil. At the end of the season make sure that all your garden tools are clean and dry over the winter. Clean your tools with a solution of one part bleach to about 20 parts of water. If, you plant anything in containers make they are clean for next year.
